A REFLECTION FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS
What kind of future are we leaving our children if we teach them how to work for money, but not what to do with it?
In our Mexican and Hispanic families, we understand hard work and sacrifice. We have watched mothers and fathers give everything to build a better future for their children.
But are we teaching them how to build on the prosperity we have worked so hard to create?
According to the U.S. Federal Reserve, in 2022 the median net worth of Hispanic families was approximately $61,600, compared with $285,000 for non-Hispanic White families.
This gap has many causes, but it invites us to reflect on something we can begin teaching at home.
We teach our children to read, write, and work.
Who teaches them to save, manage, invest, and multiply their money?
As a grandfather, I have come to see one thing clearly:
Leaving children a fortune means little if we never teach them how to manage it.
Money can run out.
The principles we plant in their minds can guide them for a lifetime.
That is why I wrote The Money Lessons Abuelo Taught Me: simple stories and family conversations that help children begin building their own financial independence.
We do not need to wait until they are adults.
We can begin today.
Our greatest legacy is not simply what we leave behind.
It is what we teach our children to build for themselves.
With gratitude, respect, and purpose,
